The Writing on the Wall

PERSERVERANCE IS NOT A LONG RACE; IT IS MANY SHORT RACES, ONE AFTER ANOTHER. - Walter Elliot

THE ONLY THING THAT STANDS BETWEEN A PERSON AND WHAT THEY WANT IN LIFE IS THE WILL TO TRY IT AND THE FAITH TO BELIEVE IT POSSIBLE.

This the motivation that is tacked to my office wall where I can see it while I work. It is right next to the calendar that has a countdown of the number of days until Big Sur.

As you might be able to tell, the map is the Big Sur Half Marathon course map. In 44 days, my Pokey behind will be seen dragging itself along this course in a somewhat-hopefully-respectable-but-doubtful fashion. Luckily I will have two other side kicks (Micheline and Lisa) to help me along.

I am nowhere near prepared for this, yet for some reason I am not yet intimidated by the thought. I am okay with where I am - and if it means I walk a large portion, so be it. The fun will be had in spending quality time (3ish hours) with 2 friends that I rarely get to see, and the ultimate accomplishment of simply finishing a distance that a year and a half ago would have been unfathomable to me.

So mentally, I am ready. The physical part is still yet to be determined.

Tomorrow I have another run on the books with the Charlie's Angels gang, minus Angie :( but plus a friend of Lisa's. :) Pat and Lisa are planning on 10 miles; I am planning on 6.

I do need a 10-miler in a couple weeks guys (hint, hint). But for tomorrow if I can manage another 6 miles, all will be well in my world.

Happy Friday!

Oh that sounds awesome to spend time with friends and enjoy. I would guess it will help calm the nerves for sure. Mine is in about 25 or so days. First time for me. This distance wasn't fathomable 4 months ago!! We'll see.

Love your blog!!

New reader here! I can't wait to hear all about Big Sur! And I just had to laugh because we must have the same foot. I am still trying to figure out what happened when they changed my Asics, so then I moved to the Brooks Adrenaline. Still not working right. Maybe I'll try those New Balance!

Let me get this straight. You're going to run the Big Sur Half. Along the ocean, beautiful scenery, a cool bridge to cross. I'm going to run the Casa Grande Half. In the desert, desert scenery, no bridge, but we get to run on some kind of test track.

I need to do a better job of picking races.

It sounds to me like you're more prepared than you think you are - I think you're going to do great! My half is in just two weeks, and I'm far less prepared than you are, but like you, I'm fine with doing a lot of walking and just enjoying it : )

Good luck on your Big Sur 1/2 coming up! And I like your idea of hanging up some inspirational quotes in your office. I may do the same, as I have the map for R'N'R AZ hanging on my cube wall.
