Is it weird?

That I have NO inkling of desire to run a full marathon?

I am truly in awe of those who do – yet I can’t muster the desire in my own brain.

I am tackling my first HM in a few weeks, with the RNR Half in January….and then I could see myself picking a couple more HM’s in 2008 and work on improving my PR’s. Nowhere in that plan does the thought of a full marathon enter my mind.

It’s like when I was in college – when a business student graduates with an accounting degree, it’s assumed….almost expected….that the graduate go on to be a public accountant, or even specifically a CPA. It was just the norm. However, I always knew that was not the career path I wanted, and that I wanted to only work in private industry. And here I am.

Running seems similar to me. Fresh out of the box, a newbie runner learns to conquer the 5K……then the 10K……then the HM…….and then the BIG DOG: the Marathon. It’s the natural progression.

I have been pondering this a lot lately – especially with reading so many inspiring stories of marathon successes.

So what is wrong with me?

Lazy? Complacent? Insecure?

I haven’t figured it out yet. When I do, I guess I will let you all know.

Amy from Runner's Lounge says Half Marathoners have more fun. Plenty of distance to challenge but don't have to kill yourself in the process. I don't think it's weird :D

I don't think it's weird at all. It's something I want to do once or twice but I like the mid range distances. Ok and I want to do an ultra as well but I am just nutty that way. I just want to try everything once or twice. :>P I really like the 5K distance. I am kind of on the 5K kick right now.

some do trails, some do ultras, some do 5 and 10ks, some do marathons and some don't run races at all. I find it's all good, do what you want and enjoy it.

Nothing at all wrong with that. And you may change your mind and if you don't no big deal at all. As long as you are enjoying yourself.

Hi, new to your blog. I don't think you are weird AT ALL. I have run marathons, and yet I have no strong desire to run another. Too much of the same old same old. If you're new, pick a goal--whatever it might be, and work at that. Don't worry about doing the same thing as everyone else. Its too easy to get caught up in what others are doing. I want to concentrate on either the 5k or the half marathon for the next year.

Marathon training takes SO long! I am running my first in two weeks. I don't know if I'll ever do another (but everyone says that!).
The half is more fun. I am sure of it.

I don't think there is anything weird about it :-) I know for me personally (I haven't even ran an HM race LOL) it's all about doing something I'm not sure I can do. Even though I was scheduled to run a HM (but had to pull out because of my stupid crotchy issues LOL) I knew from training that I could cover the mileage, so now it's lost it's luster and I want the next thing, a marathon.

I think you have brain cells left, 13.1 miles is a long way to run.

I completely understand, but come at it from a different perspective. To me, the marathon is the grand daddy of races. In my wildest dreams, I never thought it would be possible for my legs to carry me through one of those. I though runners were nuts. I've really come to enjoy the mid-lenght races -- 10k to the half (even though I've only done one of each.)

The marathon still sits out there, untested and untried. Right now, I plan to do ONE. Not one a year or one a month, but one. Just for me. I'll suck up the 16 weeks of training, and do it. After that, I'll probably go back to half's, but we'll see. I might get the distance bug, or the tri bug.

Today, though, it's just ONE!

Do what you find enjoyable, some day maybe you will try one marathon, just to say you completed it. Stick to what you enjoy. And I almost forgot, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, you youngster.

It's your birthday? Well, Happy Birthday!

I have the desire to run a marathon--but have no idea if the ability and, more importantly, the time commitment are there. I think the time issue is a big one, esp. when you have little kids. At least, it is/will be for me. I like to sleep in the mornings too much!

Girl, most people in this world can't even run ONE mile, let alone 13.1. I think a half is a perfectly wonderful level of running to aspire to.

I don't think it's weird to not want to do a marathon. There are plenty of race distances out there to choose from, and you should do whatever you enjoy most : )

Ummmm... not lazy you just know how to have fun ;) Running a half and a marathon are apples & oranges...

I definitely don't think it's weird. I think it's commendable that you're sticking to the half because it's more fun for you, rather than caving to the pressure that other runners put on you to try for the full.
